The colorful Japanese beetle (top right) has a metallic green body with copper-colored wing covers and grows to about ¼ inch in size. The grubs (left) are white with brown heads; they grow to about an inch in size and are often transported in turf. Slugs (bottom right) are another enemy of asparagus. The adult slug has dark spots on an inch-long, yellowish body. The month-old slug is brown with dark spots.

In moist weather slugs may present a problem, especially if your bed is mulched. The slugs can be turned aside by spreading a barrier of wood ashes around the bed; this acts as an irritant to their soft bodies (and the same wood ash barrier will also discourage cut-worms). Handpicking can be aided by laying a board near the asparagus at night, then removing the slugs from under it in the morning. Ashes and handpicking have worked best for us; but you can try trapping slugs, too. Just fill saucers or jar lids with beer mixed with a little flour and set them out. The slugs like the beer but find it difficult to leave the sticky solution. Clean and refill the traps once in a while.
